Mode of Intake
There are tons of ways to consume opium, but originally most people ate opium. Chemists discovered morphine in 1805 and could be directly taken. In 1853 the first metal syringe with a hollow needle was invented by a French physician. The hypodermic syringe allowed people to inject directly under the skin and into a blood vessel, producing faster effects.
At this time morphine was used to relieve pain but the problem was that anytime an individual was using morphine for a month or longer they would become dependence and addicted to the drug.
Another mode of intake was to smoke the opium. The raw opium was placed into a pot and covered with water and boiled until it was in liquid form, then it is strained so that all of the dirt and particles are taken out, and this is done over and over (so they don’t waste any) until most of the opium is clean and pure, then it is brought to a boil over a low flame, and you do this until the water evaporates and leaves a thick black paste which is the prepared opium or cooked opium and that is the part that is smoked. It is smoked in a special wooden pipe that has a bowl attached.

A Young Man's Story
There are many modes of intake for heroin, like mainlining (injecting straight into a vein), sniffing it, orally ingesting it, or injecting beneath the skin. But a lot of poor people smoke it, and to smoke it they line the powder in straight lines on some foil, then line up a straw from their mouth to a few inches away from the powder and light the bottom of the foil on fire with a match or a lighter to liquefy the heroin and then the addict sucks it up through the straw. But mostly only beginnings do it this way because this is not how they get their best high.
Most serious addicts get high using a method know as mainlining where they inject the heroin directly into the veins. When mainlining the addict using all kinds of everyday materials like spoons and bottle caps to mix and heat the heroin, then they use some type of syringe and they fit the needle into an eye dropper and fit a gasket (scrap paper, rubber, tape, or fake money) and wrap it around the needle, and a cotton ball is used to filter the dirt but that can be very dangerous in some cases as well. After that you get what is called a tourniquet (a belt, towel, necktie etc.) and tie their arm or leg or whatever parts of the body their injecting to make the veins more prominent. Addicts that do not have a needle use safety pins, razor blades, or sewing needles to cut a hole in their skin and directly place the heroin eyedropper beneath the skin. The addict empties the contents of the spoon or bottle cap, and watches closely until a bubble appears, then the contents from the spoon or bottle cap is drained through the cotton ball into the syringe or needle, then they apply the tourniquet above the elbow and insert the needle until they see blood in the eye dropper, and after this the addict feels the immediate and intense effects of the heroin that lasts for several hours.

In the beginning most addicts inject their arms, but the veins collapse over time causing them to start injecting in other parts of the body like the legs, thighs, groin areas, fingers, and toes. When all the veins are scarce addicts will even inject their necks and tongues. But death usually occurs when an addict injects too much heroin or if they are given a higher concentration of the drug than what they are used to and this is known as a hot shot. But the four main modes of intake are smoking, injection, intranasal, and ingestion. The fastest way to get addicted to the drug is by smoking it because research shows that is the fastest way for the drug to get to the brain which is why so many people are addicted to things you smoke like cigarettes.
